O'Neil she was still in high school year during the auditions, tried out for the third season of Canadian Idol during the first months of 2005. The quality of her singing impressed jury, and she was promoted to an audition in the 100th place. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by the judges. However, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat in the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, lowest 3 and the second lowest. Judges were shocked at this, and instructed the crowd to select contestants such as Melissa with the best singing abilities. O'Neil did not make it to the third place again following a series of consistently outstanding performance.
